When to redeem credit card reward points in India
Burning is spending the points you already earned. The same balance can be worth several times more on a travel portal or a transfer partner than as statement credit. A bad redemption wipes months of careful earning. Check the rupee value before you tap redeem.
Points are not one price
Issuers quote points. You should quote rupees. Statement credit and some catalogue items often pay a low rate per point. Bank travel portals, hotel or airline transfers, and selected vouchers can pay more. The right burn depends on the program, not a generic 'redeem now' habit.
HDFC SmartBuy, Axis EDGE, Amex Membership Rewards, and similar portals change rates. Verify the current value in the bank app before you commit. Do not assume last year's multiplier still holds.
When not to redeem
Do not burn a travel-oriented balance as cash if you have a trip in the next few months. Do not transfer miles to an airline you will not fly. Do not clear points just because they are sitting there, unless they are about to expire or a devaluation is confirmed.
If the goal is a flight, compare the portal booking, the transfer partner, and paying cash with a high-earn card. The best path is the one with the highest rupee value after fees, not the one the app puts first.
- Convert points to rupees before you confirm.
- Prefer the path that matches your goal: travel, voucher, or cash.
- Skip statement credit when a portal or transfer pays more.

Common questions
- When should I burn credit card reward points?
- Redeem when the rupee value is high for a goal you actually have, such as a flight or hotel, not because the bank app is open.
- Is statement credit a good way to redeem points?
- Usually no. Statement credit is often the lowest rupee value. Compare it with the issuer travel portal or a transfer partner before you accept it.
- Do reward points expire?
- Some programs expire or lose value in devaluations. Check your issuer terms. If points are close to expiry, a decent redemption beats a zero.
